Scottish Restaurants Served Top Awards

Restaurant Booking Service 5pm.co.uk & Business 7 Unveil the Scottish Restaurant Award Winners

04 MARCH 2011, SCOTLAND, UK
Summary
After weeks of anticipation, public voting and hours of judging, 5pm.co.uk, the restaurant offers and booking service, and Business 7 unveiled the winners of the fourth Scottish Restaurant Awards this week, at a spectacular ceremony at Glasgow’s Science Centre.

Hosted by Tam Cowan, and sponsored by Matthew Algie, Foodies & Bunnahbhain, the night saw the crème de la crème of the Scottish Restaurant industry come together to battle it out for the coveted gongs.

Winners were spread across the length and breadth of the country and the night was full of surprises. The little known SmithS of Uddingston was named Restaurant Of The Year as well as Urban Restaurant of The Year because its delicious, well presented food, served with pride and pitched at a reasonable price meant that the normally picky judges “Could find no fault with it at all. It is a hidden gem that people will return to time and again.

Despite the recent misfortune of his restaurants Atrium and Blue being forced to close, Neil Forbes was named as Chef Of The Year.

Said Ronnie Somerville of event organisers 5pm.co.uk
:Although Atrium and Blue have closed, the reasons for giving Neil Forbes the award didn't suddenly disappear. His contribution to the Scottish restaurant scene still stands and many of the chefs who have benefited from his quarter century of experience will testify to that - as will the local producers whose businesses can continue, at least in part, because of Neil's passion for Scottish produce. There is no doubt that
Forbes will continue to contribute to Scottish food for many years to come. If you want to discover what commitment to the local food chain tastes like, then Neil is cooking at Cafe St Honoré.”

Other winners included Martin Wishart for Fine Dining, Best Rural Restaurant went to the famous Three Chimneys and Castle Terrace was named as Newcomer of The Year. (Full list at the end)

Host Tam Cowan said: "It's an honour to host the 2011 Scottish Restaurant Awards. Having reviewed about 85 percent of the restaurants that made the shortlist, I know for a fact the standard was extremely high this year – so well done to the winners. As for the 15 percent on the list that I haven't reviewed, if they want a follow up chat my usual rate is three grand in used notes..."

Denise West, publisher of Business7, said: "Scotland has a growing reputation at the world culinary table and all of the nominees at the Scottish Restaurant Awards deserve praise for furthering that reputation.

"With an emphasis on inspired menus, fantastic produce and top quality customer service these awards highlight the very best of what the Scottish dining scene has to offer. We congratulate each of the winners on their achievements."
